Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS)

EPICS High

EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) High is an engineering, service learning program that engages high school classrooms in working with stakeholders in their communities to develop solutions to real-world problems. To identify and address these problems, EPICS High teams work closely with their schools or not-for-profit agencies. The EPICS High program is a proven engagement tool for developing a life-long appreciation for STEM and service learning in K-12 students.

EPICS High Olympiad

The EPICS High Olympiad is a field trip event (online or in-person) each fall. The event includes an EPICS design challenge based on a real world scenario and is intended to give participants a taste of what a real EPICS High project is all about.

EPICS High Showcase

Through the EPICS High Showcase we celebrate the outstanding projects produced by EPICS High students. Volunteers including engineering graduate and undergraduate students, engineering faculty, and industry professionals review each project. Top ranked teams are recognized in the following areas: Community Impact, Innovation, Outstanding EPICS High Middle School Project, and, for teams whose work embodies the spirit of EPICS High overall, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Epic EPICS High awards.

“EPICS is a chance to actually make a change in the community, and the responsibilities, impact, and learning potential extend far beyond the classroom.”

“We can make a difference in our community by coming up with ideas and solutions.”

”In other classes, failure is a big deal. You do something wrong and get a bad grade and no opportunity to do it better. It feels like you can’t make mistakes in other spaces, whereas in engineering, failure is seen as progress.”
