What is Girls Make-A-Thon?
It is a fairly well-known fact that women and girls are underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math and that lack of access to opportunities is one of the root causes (Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2014). Girls Make-A-Thon encourages young women to discover and/or pursue their capacity to become STEM-savvy change makers and leaders.
At this free, one-day event, participants will engage with engineering women from ASU and from industry, learn about resources to help launch a future in engineering, broaden their network of mentors, and hone their maker skills by solving engineering challenges.
What will I gain from Girls Make-A-Thon?
- College preparation – enjoy an engineering tour and learn how to prepare for college from our partners in Financial Aid, Admissions, etc.
- Career preparation – explore different options and learn about the nuances of engineering careers from industry professionals
- Engineering mindset – through hands-on activities develop essential skills such as (1) systems thinking, (2) creativity, (3) optimism, (4) collaboration, (5) communication, and (6) ethical considerations (National Academy of Engineering)
74% of middle school girls express an interest in engineering, science, and math but only 0.3% choose computer science as a major when they get to college (Girlswhocode.org).
Of the 2.6% of female freshmen that intended to pursue engineering in 2007, only 60% graduated with an engineering degree within six years. (NSF, Science and Engineering Indicators, 2016).
Only 13% of engineers are women, female engineers earn 90 cents for every dollar male engineers earn, and only 17% of tenured/tenure-track faculty in engineering are women (Society of Women Engineers, 2018).
